Seed doctorNever asks for your words
1. How many words does your backup have?
2. Which app gave you the words?

Answer both questions. Your answer shows up here.

We never ask for your recovery words here, and nobody honest ever will on a website. Type them only into a wallet app you trust.

Which Monero recovery phrase do I have?

The number of words tells you most of the story. The app that made it tells you the rest.

Why no words

Why this tool never asks for your words

A website that asks for your recovery words is the classic way Monero gets stolen.

Since MyMonero shut down in January 2026, search results for "restore my Monero seed" are full of copies that look helpful and can send any phrase typed into them to a thief. A real tool does not need your words to tell you what they are.

When you do restore, do it in a wallet app you trust, on your own device. In MonkStash the words stay in your browser: the restore screen checks each word and the check word before it starts, and nothing is uploaded. See how to spot fake Monero sites.

Restored and found 0

Why a restored wallet can show 0

Your coins are on the chain, not in the app. The wallet just has not found them yet.

  1. i
The restore height is too late

The wallet only reads blocks after it, so earlier payments are skipped. Restore again with an earlier date. Too early only costs time; too late hides money.

  2. ii
    The scan has not finished

The balance builds up as the wallet reads the chain. Wait until it says it is up to date before you judge it.

  3. iii
    It is a different wallet

Check that the address after restoring matches the one you used. A 12 or 24-word phrase made by another app, or with a passphrase, can open a different, empty wallet.

  4. iv
The money is in another account

Some wallets keep several accounts in one seed. Look for an account list in the wallet.

Questions

Recovery phrase questions, answered

1Is it safe to type my seed into a seed checker website?

No. Anyone who sees your recovery words can take your money, and fake checker and wallet sites exist to collect them. This tool only asks how many words you have and which app made them. Type your words only into a wallet app you trust, on your own device.

2Why does my restored Monero wallet show 0?

Usually the restore height is too late, so the wallet skipped your earlier payments, or the scan has not finished. Restore again with an earlier date and wait until it says it is up to date. Also check that the address matches the one you used: a phrase from another app can open a different, empty wallet.

3What is a 16-word Monero seed?

It is a Polyseed, the newer format that Feather (since version 2.0) and Cake Wallet use. The wallet's creation date is built into the words, so you do not need a restore height. To use it in a wallet without Polyseed support, Feather can show the same wallet as a 25-word seed.

4Can I turn a 25-word seed into a 16-word Polyseed?

No. Feather's documentation explains that Polyseed derives the spend key in a way that cannot be reversed. To get a Polyseed, create a new wallet and move your funds to it.

5My Monero seed has 24 words. Is that wrong?

Not always. It may be a standard seed missing its 25th check word, which can be worked out from the other 24 (the MonkStash restore screen does this). It can also be a hardware wallet's phrase, which you use with the device, or a 24-word BIP39 phrase from Cake Wallet.

6Do I need a restore height?

For every format except Polyseed, yes, or the wallet scans the whole chain. Pick a date before your first payment: too early only costs time, too late hides money. This tool and our restore height calculator turn a date into a block height.
